Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a license to buy a gun in Michigan?

For long guns (rifles and shotguns): no license required, just a valid Michigan ID and a passing federal background check (NICS) at the time of purchase. For handguns: you need either a Michigan Concealed Pistol License (CPL) or a Pistol Purchase License (PPL) issued by your local sheriff or police department. CPL holders are exempt from the PPL requirement under MCL § 28.422.

What’s an FFL transfer and why do I need one?

If you buy a firearm online or from someone in another state, federal law (18 U.S.C. § 922) requires the firearm to ship to a federally licensed dealer (an FFL holder) in your state, who then completes the federal background check (4473 + NICS) and transfers the firearm to you. We’re an FFL. Read our full transfer process.

How long does shipping take?

In-stock firearms typically arrive at the receiving FFL within 3–7 business days of shipment, depending on your distance from Michigan. We ship via UPS Ground or FedEx Ground with insurance and adult-signature delivery.

Can you ship a handgun directly to my house?

No — not legally. Federal law requires handguns to ship to an FFL holder. The same applies to rifles and shotguns when shipped across state lines. Non-firearm products (optics, parts, accessories, magazines that are state-legal at your destination) ship directly.

Do you sell to first-time gun buyers?

Absolutely. A meaningful share of our customers are first-time buyers. If you’re new to firearms and don’t know where to start, give us a call at (616) 805-5300 — we’ll walk you through caliber selection, brand differences, and what makes sense for your use case (concealed carry, home defense, hunting, sport shooting). No pressure, no upsells.

What if my background check is delayed?

The FBI’s NICS system returns one of three responses: Proceed, Denied, or Delayed. A “Delayed” means the FBI is investigating something on your record — could be a name match with someone else, an old arrest, etc. Federal law gives the FBI three business days to resolve a Delay; after that, the dealer can legally choose to proceed at their discretion. We extend the full 3-day window before making that call.

Can I buy a suppressor?

Yes — suppressors are legal in Michigan with an approved ATF Form 4 and a $200 federal tax stamp. We’re a Class 3 SOT (Special Occupational Taxpayer) and handle the full process. Average wait time for eFile suppressor approvals is currently 30–90 days. Contact us to start.

What about an SBR (short-barreled rifle)?

Same answer as suppressors: legal in Michigan with Form 4 + $200 stamp. We process those too.

Do you charge a fee for transfers?

$25 for long guns, $35 for handguns (includes the Michigan Pistol Sales Record fee). Multiple firearms in the same shipment: $15 each additional. Full pricing on the FFL Transfer page.

Can I return a firearm if I don’t like it?

Once a firearm has been transferred to you (4473 completed), federal law prohibits us from taking it back as a return. Before transfer: yes, we can cancel and refund. See our Returns Policy for details.

Can I pick up at your shop in Grand Rapids?
